Dani paced her apartment, mind whirring with all the epic failures of her day. It was hard to believe that finding Raj at her mother’s bedside wasn’t even the worst of it. All of it flashed through her head—the sigils at the morgue, using Pam to identify them, the name Verloc Djurian Rlenheim meaning nothing to the Ink.

At least she hadn’t asked Raj to use the demon’s true name to find the necromancer who summoned it. There was no way she wanted him that involved now, not after how he’d acted around the mayor. But that left her with next to zero leads.

Except … Nathaniel Conrad knew Ellie, even without her surname. The necromancer might not have admitted to anything else, but there was no denying the fear that flitted across his face at the mention of Ellie. Especially since Raj’s power picked up the lie—even if he wouldn’t do anything with that information.

But what did Conrad expect her to say? Ellie the barmaid?

Ellie the escort?

Dani grabbed her jacket and slung it on. There was still a man—if he could be called that—who might have information for her.

Sean McGrath’s place looked as beaten down as the first time she’d been there, and Dani wasted no time with pleasantries when she got up to his floor. She aimed a kick at the lock, and the door burst open, chains snapping and wood splintering from the force behind it.

Ellie’s ex-boyfriend-slash-pimp startled from his place on the couch and sent an avalanche of empty beer bottles crashing to the floor. Sean whirled around, his hands coming up in fists like the world’s worst boxer, but his face drained of color when he spotted Dani. “What are you doing here?” he asked with far less bravado than Dani guessed he intended.

At least he seemed to have learned his lesson after their last visit.

“Why didn’t you tell me about Mayor Conrad?”

Sean had the audacity to look confused. “What about him?”

“Cut the bullshit, McGrath.” Dani reached for her sword, the poor excuse for a man watching her every movement. Good. He should fear her.

“I don’t—”

Dani tightened her grip but didn’t pull the weapon loose. “I’ve had a hell of a day, and my patience for fuckery is nonexistent.”

Sean measured the distance between Dani and the door. He shifted his weight. Then with a sudden burst of speed, he dove around the couch. Dani sighed at his pitiful attempt at escape. She drew her sword, flicked the magically hidden blade into place, and threw.

The sword arced through the air and embedded itself into the wall, mere millimeters from Sean’s head.

“One last time,” Dani said as she approached the trembling man. “The mayor.”

His knees buckled, and Sean sank to the floor, crawling away from her. “I work with a lot of politicians,” he admitted. “I’m the supply guy.”

Dani yanked her sword from the wall and rested the flat of the blade across her shoulder. “What kind of supplies?”

“Whatever they ask for. Drugs and information, mostly. But sometimes …” He trailed off until Dani tapped the tip of her blade against his ankle.
